چکیده

This paper presents a plausible reformulation and extension to the Bouc-Wen hysteresis model and gives an excellent summary and comparison of various theories of deteriorating constitutive models of hysteresis. A preliminary study on the effect of using overly simple hysteresis models (e.g., the bilinear model) when actual behavior includes strength degradation, stiffness degradation, and/or pinching indicated potentially significant errors in estimates of peak response and reliability of some structural systems (Paevere and Foliente 2000). Thus, as the authors correctly stated, ‘‘such deterioration must be taken into account in the modeling and design of seismic-resistant structural systems.’’ The discussers commend the authors for putting forward a unifying concept that relates seemingly disparate deterioration models. This has many potential practical applications and will surely add to our understanding of the complex response of realistic systems under extreme dynamic loads. Not intending to downplay the paper’s significant contribution, the discussers wish to make some clarifying comments on the modeling of asymmetric yielding hysteresis, stiffness degradation, and pinching in the paper.

Evaluation of Damage Distribution in Elements of Dual Frames

Researches show that the strength criterion is inadequate for design of structures against seismic loads. Since structures yield and experience plastic deformation under strong ground motion, considering structural damage with inelastic behavior may be a considerable criterion for design and control of the structures. In this paper, three steel structures with dual system consisting of intermedi...

SEISMIC ENERGY DEMANDS OF INELASTIC BUILDINGS DESIGNED WITH OPTIMUM DISPLACEMENT-BASED APPROACH

In present study, the effects of optimization on seismic energy spectra including input energy, damping energy and yielding hysteretic energy are parametrically discussed. To this end, 12 generic steel moment-resisting frames having fundamental periods ranging from 0.3 to 3s are optimized by using uniform damage and deformation approaches subjected to a series of 40 non-pule strong ground motio...

Hysteretic Models for Deteriorating Inelastic Structures

The modeling of deteriorating hysteretic behavior is becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of seismic analysis and design. This paper presents the development of a versatile smooth hysteretic model based on internal variables, with stiffness and strength deterioration and with pinching characteristics. The theoretical background, development, and implementation of the model...

Force Reduction Factor R for Shear Dominated Low-Rise Brick Masonry Structures

This paper presents investigation carried out, including experimental and numerical studies, on low-rise shear-dominated brick masonry structures for the calculation of force reduction factor R. Basic experimental tests were conducted on masonry constituent materials for mechancial characterization. In-plane quasi-static cyclic tests were conducted on twelve full scale brick masonry walls, to u...

A Robust Online Parametric Identification Method for Non-Deteriorating and Deteriorating Distributed Element Models with Viscous Damping

The online parametric identification of deteriorating and non-deteriorating distributed element models (DEMs) with viscous damping is studied using a generalization of Masing model to provide the proper framework for identification. The approach renders the hysteretic response of the DEM into a time-independent single-valued mapping from equivalent displacement values into equivalent force valu...
